The Cross Group: A Brief History

The origins of Cross Refrigeration date back to the mid 19th
century when two members of a Cork family with the surname
Cross started a carriage hire and stables business in the
centre of Cork.
In the 1920’s Cross’s Garage Ltd extended their
business to the sale of ice boxes and mechanical domestic
refrigerators. Our early sales ledgers show that the first
commercial coldroom was sold in early 1930 to the Royal Oyster
Tavern, Market lane, Cork- a very famous and popular old Cork
restaurant.
Cross quickly realised the potential of commercial refrigeration
and quickly re-trained some of it's motor mechanics
on refrigeration discipline and incredibly the sons
of some of the earlier mechanics are still actively
involved in Cross Refrigeration today.
In 1966 Cross’s were appointed the Frigidare distributors
for Ireland and at this time decided to separate the refrigeration
division from the garage and formed a separate company- Cross
Refrigeration Ltd.
In 1968 some of the present directors purchased the
business from the Cross family.
